Main Water Line Repair in Meridian, Idaho

Imagine a home in the Ten Mile area of Meridian, Idaho, built after the city adopted the Ten Mile Interchange plan in 2007. In late June a strip of lawn along the back fence turns soft and green while the rest of the yard is stressed from the heat, and the water bill from the city has not moved. The back lot line is exactly where the pressurized irrigation main runs through that subdivision, but the potable service line crosses the front yard from the meter box. Which system is leaking decides who fixes it and whether the house needs to be shut off at all.

Most Meridian subdivisions carry two water systems. The city says pressurized irrigation lines run along the back lot lines of most subdivisions, fed by surface ditch water that is not safe to drink and not owned or operated by the City of Meridian. Irrigation districts such as Nampa Meridian run those systems on a published season, from about mid-April to early October. The drinking water service line is a separate pipe from the city meter to the house, carrying well water at 50 to 80 psi.

That timing is a clue. A wet spot that appears only during irrigation season and dries up in October is usually the irrigation side; one that persists through winter, or shows up on a water bill, points to the potable main line.
