Picture one of the older houses a few blocks from the Indian Creek Greenbelt in downtown Kuna, in the historic district the city set out to revive with its 2015 plan. The home predates the subdivisions that now surround it, and so does its plumbing. Pressure at the kitchen sink has dropped over the past year, the hall bathroom drain gurgles when the washer empties, and the shutoff under the sink will not turn. Nothing has failed outright yet. The homeowner wants a plumber who will look at the whole house, say what is original and what is worth replacing, and put it in writing.

Only about 7 percent of Kuna homes were built before 1980, and three quarters date from 2000 or later, so a plumber here sees two very different kinds of house: decades-old lines and fixtures in the historic downtown district, and builder-grade valves, faucets and disposals in subdivisions now reaching their first round of repairs.

The City of Kuna supplies the drinking water from nine city wells through roughly 106 miles of pipe, and the same water staff run a municipal pressurized irrigation system fed from the New York Canal. The city requires every residence with a sprinkler system to have a backflow prevention device installed and inspected every year, and it says failure to comply will result in the water being turned off. The comprehensive plan also calls for extending pressurized irrigation to older parts of town.

Plumbing work in Kuna is permitted work. The City of Kuna Building Department requires a plumbing permit before any work begins, and its application lists sewer lines, water lines, backflow devices and water heater replacements as permit items for an existing home.

Elevated handles the full list for Kuna homeowners: leak detection and repair, drain cleaning, faucet, toilet and disposal work, pipe repair and repiping, water pressure problems, and emergency plumbing on any day we are open, which is all seven, 7am to 5pm. The inspection and the written estimate come free at the start of every job.
